Thomson introduces fully certified EuroDOCSIS 3.0 wireless VoIP cable gateway for advanced digital and online services

10/26/2009

TWG870 has Cable Europe Labs certification for data and voice services, and leads the industry in energy-sensitive design

Paris (France), 26 October 2009 – Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453; NYSE: TMS), a worldwide leader of services to content creators, has achieved full Cable Europe Labs certification for EuroDOCSIS 3.0 and EuroPacketCable 1.5 for its new TWG870 wireless and VoIP cable gateway. Performance of the device in the ECW36 certification wave, performed by Excentis, ensures its interoperability with other equipment in practical implementations of rich data services over cable networks including very high speed internet access, voice and video over IP.

“Through DOCSIS 3.0, cable operators can deliver an unrivalled triple-play offering to the home, including very high speed broadband as well as fully-featured telephony and video over IP,” said Pascal Portelli, Vice President Gateways & Connected Devices, of Thomson. “With the certification from Cable Europe Labs, cable operators can be confident that the Thomson TWG870 can be swiftly deployed to take advantage of this competitive edge and deliver the combination of functionality that their subscribers demand.”

The new Thomson TWG870 cable gateway is designed to act as the hub of a powerful home network. The EuroDOCSIS 3.0 specification allows for the bonding of up to eight channels for data, offering internet access speeds of up to 300Mb/s to the home. As part of the Excentis certification programme, the TWG870 was tested in bonded modes up to the maximum data speed in conjunction with network equipment from leading suppliers including Casa and Cisco. As well as the core functionality, Excentis successfully tested optional features of the Thomson TWG870 cable gateway, including the internet low bitrate codec (ILBC) and the BV16 codec for voice over IP applications, as well as silence suppression (voice activation detection), basic and hybrid provisioning flow.

To match the high speed access, the TWG870 has four gigabit ethernet ports for a wired network, and 802.11n high-speed wireless capabilities. Support of the 802.11n standard greatly increases the range as well as speed of access, allowing the TWG870 to be the single point solution for a range of rich media sharing services everywhere in the home. The gateway also supports voice telephony including multiple lines, user services such as caller ID and call waiting, and is ready for solutions such as fixed-mobile convergence.
