Technicolor News
Reality is the last thing Warner Bros. wanted to get in the way of “Clash of the Titans,” its new 3D epic fantasy directed by Louis Leterrier. But the hard realities of premiering the movie just 11 months after the start of principal photography was very much on the studio’s mind. Which is one of the reasons Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures selected Technicolor as their partner to meet the ambitious project’s very tight deadlines.
Technicolor and its U.K.-based MPC subsidiary provided a broad range of services from VFX and dailies/front end to DI and digital cinema mastering and distribution, principally from facilities in the U.K., where most of the shooting occurred.
Technicolor will manage all physical media, including BD/DVD compression and authoring, foreign language versioning and worldwide DVD/BD replication and distribution.
Technicolor is also helping Warner Bros. and the industry with its Technicolor 3D film-based theatrical 3D solution. Clash of the Titans will be the 2nd feature to leverage Technicolor’s high quality / low cost 3D solution.
The Clash of the Titans partnership between Warner Bros. and Technicolor was successful in part thanks to the seamless cooperation between U.K.- and U.S.-based creative services teams. For example, approved color corrected (2D) files were sent using the Technicolor Production Network from Technicolor London to Technicolor in Hollywood where they were turned over to Prime Focus for use in 2D to 3D conversion and also served as the source for 2D film recording in Los Angeles. Within a matter of weeks, test sections and footage used to create marketing presentations were sent back to Technicolor Hollywood. These early turnovers as well as final versions moved quickly through Technicolor’s 3D data, conforming and color correction pipeline. Final 3D digital cinema and Technicolor 3D film deliverables were made from the resulting renders.
Technicolor’s experience providing services on over 35 3D films prior to Clash of the Titans was key to the success in making the tight delivery deadlines.
At our brand-new Technicolor UK facilities at Pinewood and Lexington Street, we completed the following services: Full front-end negative developing and digital dailies; some daily footage batches exceeded 20,000 ft. In addition London completed the scanning and dust busting and the entire 2K feature was conformed in Smoke and the grade was completed in Lustre Incinerator. Members of our London team managed the data for the 2D DI and also sent the data to LA for film recording and the 3D preparation. Technicolor London also provided HD mastering, teaser trailers, film recording, answer printing and release printing services.
