Technicolor News
Technicolor completed the post production work on Senna, the award-winning documentary feature about Brazilian Formula 1™ racing legend, Ayrton Senna. Produced by Universal and Working Title Films, Senna recently won the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film at the Sundance Film Festival.
Full DI Services from Ingest to Filmout
Senna director Asif Kapadia cut the entire 104-minute film entirely from archival footage, with formats ranging from 16mm to HDCAM. Technicolor London performed the full DI services, with principal colorist, Paul Ensby completing the grading on the Lustre System, and DI editor, Jaime Leanard, contributing his talents as well. Our team also performed ingest, recording metadata and AV materials, and handled both video and DC mastering. In addition, Technicolor facilitated the film out with the Cinevator® at our Pinewood facility, and also managed the answer and release printing.
Technicolor worked closely with the Senna production team to ensure that the material looked its best at 2K resolution. We completed the conform and online work with the Autodesk® Smoke® system, and also did some restoration work; though Kapadia was keen on keeping most of the footage in its original state. Finally, our Technicolor Soho team worked with our colleagues at Perivale to subtitle the feature quickly and meet the client’s creative needs on schedule.
Senna documents the monumental life and tragic death of legendary F1 motor-racing champion, Ayrton Senna. The film spans the decade beginning in the mid 80's when Senna first arrived in Formula 1™ and follows his struggles both on and off track against French World Champion, Alain Prost. This intense, captivating documentary also probes the politics of the sport.
While screening Senna at the Los Angeles Film Festival, Kapadia responded to questions about the film’s prospects in the United States by noting that, "Americans do love their cars, and it's also just a great story of a rivalry."
Kapadia, a BAFTA award winning director, previously collaborated with Technicolor through our MPC (The Moving Picture Company) for the 2007 crime drama, Far North.
Senna was released by the Producers Distribution Agency (PDA), the same company that released the Oscar-nominated Banksy film, Exit Through the Gift Shop.
