In May of 2008, Technicolor, with cooperation from the studio community and the support of NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners), launched a trailer recycling program. Also introduced in 2008 was the use of green labels applied to all cans and boxes being shipped from Technicolor that would remind all theatre employees to take advantage of this program. Participation in this program is easy and costs nothing. Exhibitors wishing to participate in the program are urged to place their used trailers for any studio inside Technicolor orange film cans.

When the film is returned to our facility, loose trailers are pulled from the shipping cans or boxes and placed in a large cardboard bin, commonly called a “Gaylord.” When these Gaylords are full, they are then loaded and transported to our film recycling facility. Trailers which are left on the first reel of the film are recycled with the film itself when the studio has designated it for destruction.

Once the trailers arrive at our recycling facility, they are removed and poured into a special machine that shreds the trailers into 1/8 in. flakes, which are then re-packaged and prepped for transport to the Long Beach Harbor, where they will ultimately be shipped to a much larger facility in China.

When the shipment is delivered to China, the recycling facility then takes all recycled trailers and will melt them down into a substance that is then filtered for any impurities. The process is complete once all traces of ink are removed from the trailer, and is then cut into sheets of plastic. These plastic sheets are then palletized and stored within the facility for future use, which leads us into our last phase of the trailer recycling program. Some of the final products you will see madfinal products made from recycled trailersfrom these recycled trailers include: turf for athletic fields, children’s toys, articles of clothing including shirts, soda bottles and reusable shopping bags.
