Jens Spille Senior Scientist

Jens Spille

Senior Scientist

Short Bio

Jens Spille received his degree of Dipl.-Ing. in electrical communication from the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany in 1987. Since then he has been working for Technicolor, formerly named Thomson. Except of a few years, where he acts as a quality manager, he has been working in the audio research lab. Today he is engaged as Senior Scientist on 3D audio systems.

Jens Spille is an audio engineer. His special field of work is acoustics, psychoacoustics, digital audio signal processing, audio system integrations, and he has been developing audio algorithms and systems for more than 25 years. He started with digital audio compression for two channels stereo in 1987 at the university, continued with surround sound systems, and today he is performing research on universal, scalable and interactive audio formats for 3D.

Jens has more than 18 years of experience in standardization work. For MPEG he invented adaptive window switching methods for mp3, optimized the psychoacoustic model for MPEG reference software, worked as conformance editor, studied and defined sound source shapes and wideness for MPEG-4.

In recent years he actively contributed to the European funded project FascinatE. For the 3D sound acquisition system he made audio test shots and contributed to the definition of the capture test bed. Before that, he worked on finite simulations of acoustic wave propagations and on elevation perceptions for headphones using HRTF cues.

From 2003 to 2008 he worked as quality representative and manager, he is still interested to discuss and exchange opinions about development methodologies and experiences with quality and project management methods and tools to improve project workflows.
