Discover Technicolor HDR Color Grading & Correction Solutions

The entertainment industry has always looked for ways to leverage new technologies in service of better consumer viewing experiences. This overarching goal continues today with innovations like 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) and the development of new enhancements based on Higher Dynamic Range (HDR), Wider Color Gamut (WCG) and Higher Frame Rate (HFR).

These technological developments offer great promise, but there is an immediate challenge: very little content takes advantage of these new capabilities. As a result, the pressure is on to find solutions that can handle natively graded HDR content, but that can enhance existing Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content as well.

Technicolor offers an immediate opportunity to unlock the millions of hours of existing SDR content and release it into an HDR world. Utilizing our color science plugins and color grading plugins, our algorithms analyze video content in real-time, enabling adjustments of luminance in the shadows as well as mid-tones and highlights. These tools give us an unparalleled level of control, allowing us to expand content to a wider space and higher dynamic range while maintaining creative intent.

HDR requires high contrast with deep blacks & bright whites, not just brighter pixels. Simply making a scene brighter isn’t the solution and can skew the creative intent of a scene. Technicolor digital colorists have the knowledge and expertise to maintain and deliver the original creative intent of the look.

Different types of content (theatrical, live sports, local news, and music videos), benefit from different approaches. An old TV show (vintage color correction) does not require the same level of remastering for HDR that a new theatrical release would require. Creating content now in HDR provides greater flexibility, even if the final delivery format is not HDR. Expanding the dynamic range of content to improve the experience while preserving artistic intent is what we do best. Our services include a range of solutions for both existing libraries and new content creation from camera original RAW content.

HDR color grading services are available at Technicolor post production facilities globally. Projects will be graded to the HDR specifications set forth by the UHD Alliance.
