The 2017 South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals kicks off March 10th in Austin, Texas – and Technicolor is set to have its biggest presence ever at the event that celebrates the convergence of film, music, and interactive experiences.  Always looking to push the boundaries of technology and artistry in service of the story, Technicolor and our family of VFX brands will be leading several discussions around some key industry trends.

For starters, Technicolor’s The Mill is planning a crowd-pleasing lineup of technology demos and riveting talks focused on innovation and change. Panels will be focused on VR and AR hot topics such as “The Impact of Audio on the VR Visual Story,” featuring Technicolor’s Scott Gershin. Among the award nominations at this year’s event, The Mill’s BLACKBIRD® has made this year’s coveted SXSW Interactive Innovation shortlist and will be featured in the Finalist Demo Showcase.

Girish Balakrishnan, Lead Virtual Production Developer for Technicolor’s MPC, will be speaking on the Pixar to Pixel: Games, Rendering & Future of Film panel. VR content by MPC will be available for demo throughout the show, with a preview of The Chainsmokers’ ‘Paris’ VR music experience at Sony’s Lost in Music event before its spring release.

Wonder Buffalo, a room scale VR experience that provides awareness to sensitive subjects including bullying and body confidence, will be available to view throughout the festival. The Technicolor Experience Center collaborated with the Entertainment Technology Center @ USC to facilitate immersive sound and animation on the project.

Attendees will also have a chance to see some great examples of immersive filmmaking, as Technicolor worked on several features premiering at SXSW, including Closing Night Film Life, a sci-fi thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, with color finishing by Steve Scott with additional colorists Charles Bunnag, Mike Sowa and Gray Marshall, editorial work by Bob Schneider, Nick Hasson, Mark Sahagun, VFX, and Marketing Services handled domestic and international trailers produced by Sean Ware and edited by Patrick Phillips with Ntana Key color grading under Scott’s supervision.  Technicolor sound supervisor Brad North, mixers Joe DeAngelis and Ken Kobett and designer David Werntz worked on Neil Gaiman’s American Gods , and sound mixers Craig Mann and Laura Wiest worked on the indie film Hot Summer Nights.
