Join Technicolor for Talks and Demos at SIGGRAPH 2017
  • Technicolor and MPC are presenting four talks covering their Oscar-winning VFX work on Disney’s The Jungle Book and other films.
  • Both The Mill and MPC will be on hand to demonstrate some of the latest immersive entertainment experiences.

Technicolor and creative brands MPC and The Mill will have a strong presence this year at SIGGRAPH, the world’s largest and most influential conference and exhibition where computer graphics meet interactive techniques. The 44th annual SIGGRAPH event features five days of breakthrough research and demos, advanced training and educational sessions, digital media extravaganzas, and creative collaborations highlighting the community’s latest and greatest technological achievements.

A special destination for SIGGRAPH attendees are the coveted Talk sessions, which take you “behind the scenes and into the minds” of the best creative forces in art, design, animation, visual effects, interactivity, research, and engineering. Technicolor and MPC team members have been selected to present four of these talks, covering their work on such films as The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and The Jungle Book, for which they won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Be sure to check out their talks at SIGGRAPH 2017:

Cloudy with a Chance of Rendering
July 30 @ 10:45AM
Disney's The Jungle Book required MPC to deliver work of unprecedented visual complexity. The main challenge was to ensure that excess capacity was provided through the flexible and scalable nature of cloud-based resources, while meeting the client's strict security requirements.

Featuring: Hannes Ricklefs, MPC

The Water Effects of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
July 31 @ 2PM
Ships emerge from the bottom of the ocean, an ocean parts and collapses, a ship floats in a bottle, and dozens of characters interact with the surrounding sea. This talk discusses MPC's approach to these challenging full-CG shots.

Featuring: Rob Hopper and Kai Wolter, MPC

From VFX Project Management to Predictive Forecasting
August 3 @ 9AM
This talk proposes a novel solution centered around a general evaluation data model and APIs that convert production data (job/scene/shot/schedule/task) to business-intelligence insights – enabling performance and predictive analytics for accurate forecasting of future VFX production process performance.

Featuring: Hannes Ricklefs and Stefan Puschendorf, MPC

Brian Eriksson, Sandilya Bhamidipati, and Akshay Pushparaja, Technicolor SA

Optical Flow-based Face Tracking in The Mummy
August 3 @ 10:45AM
To simplify the addition of CG elements (runs, split eyes, torn skin, etc.) on Princess Ahmanet in The Mummy, MPC's software team built several usability tools around its optical-flow system.

Featuring: Curtis Andrus, MPC

SIGGRAPH is also host to a comprehensive exhibition of products and solutions where attendees can get up-close and hands-on with the newest hardware systems, software tools, and creative services from hundreds of companies. Technicolor continues to push the boundaries of immersive experiences with over 40 immersive projects in our stable. You can check out some of the latest work by both The Mill and MPC, Technicolor companies, at SIGGRAPH’s VR Village.

Also of note: Last year, Pascal Lecocq, researcher at Technicolor’s R&I Media Computing Lab in Rennes, won “Best Paper Award” and “Best Presentation Award” at the annual SIGGRAPH i3D Conference for his paper, “Accurate Analytic Approximations for Real-time Specular Area Lighting.” Written with contributions from fellow Technicolor employees Arthur Dufay, Gaël Sourimant, and Jean-Eudes Marvie, the same paper is being honored again this year with a citation in the “21st Annual Best of Computing Notable Books and Articles” published by the ACM.

For all of this and more, please join Technicolor at this year’s SIGGRAPH!
