Adding colour and contrast to romantic comedy feature Austenland

Technicolor is delighted to reveal its involvement in the upcoming US feature film, Austenland.

Austenland is a romantic comedy about 30-something, single Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a seemingly normal young woman with a secret: her obsession with all things Jane Austen.  But when she decides to spend her life savings on a trip to an English resort catering to Austen–crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency–era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined.

Written and directed by Jerusha Hess (screenwriter, Napoleon Dynamite) and produced by Stephenie Meyer (writer, The Twilight Saga), the film features an all-star cast including Bret McKenzie, Georgia King, Jane Seymour, JJ Feild and Jennifer Coolidge. Austenland was shot on 35mm film by US based DP Larry Smith.

Technicolor Principle Colourist Paul Ensby, said: “Where possible, we pushed the colour and contrast to make the most of the exterior countryside and lavish costume design. This fantasy world contrasts nicely with the scenes in the US, which are less colourful as Jane returns to her mundane normal life.”

“One of the biggest challenges was centred on a scene where Jane is caught in a rainstorm and takes shelter in a woodland. The scenes immediately prior and after this were very sunny so extra care had to be taken to develop and remove the storm slowly.”

Austenland releases in the UK on Friday 27th September 2013.
