The Mill Goes To Washington

The White House invited Technicolor’s The Mill to participate in a new festival of ideas, art, and action.
  • Technicolor’s The Mill was invited to participate in South by South Lawn (SXSL), an event inspired by South by Southwest.
  • SXSL brought together creators, innovators, and organizers who work to improve the lives of their fellow Americans and people around the world.
  • A member of the Technicolor Experience Center (TEC), The Mill is part of an ecosystem of technologists and artists across teams at Technicolor – and partners – dedicated to advancing a new form of storytelling.

At SXSL on October 3rd, The Mill demonstrated 6x9: A Virtual Experience of Solitary Confinement, a critically-acclaimed experience co-created by The Mill and The Guardian, which places the user inside a solitary confinement cell with little more than a bed and a toilet. It simulates some of the psychological effects associated with solitary confinement, such as blurred vision, hallucinations, and a sense of floating that may occur after long-term sensory deprivation.

Boo Wong, Director of Emerging Technology at The Mill, noted, “Being selected by The White House for this project is an incredible honor. At The Mill, we strive to tell stories in compelling ways and find powerful applications of technology that help viewers connect and immerse themselves in new worlds. This collaboration with The Guardian demonstrates the power of virtual reality to inform and educate on pressing issues, where traditional formats my not have the same impact.”
