The Rules Don’t Apply For Technicolor On Beatty’s New Film

Technicolor teams up with Hollywood legend Warren Beatty for his latest directorial feature.
  • The Technicolor Hollywood in-house VFX team provided more than 600 VFX shots.

For those in the industry, Warren Beatty’s new film, Rules Don’t Apply, was a rare opportunity to work with one of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers and multi-talented stars. Beatty – whose last feature film as director was the politically-themed Bulworth – has created a moving love story set against the backdrop of 1958 Hollywood, just as the industry was at the height of the blacklist and the country was emerging from a very puritanical era.

In the film, which he wrote and directed, Beatty portrays billionaire Howard Hughes, whose well-known eccentricities leave two employees – played by Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich – defying his number one rule about work relationships when they fall in love at first sight.

For Beatty, this has been called “a longtime passion project,” and Technicolor was chosen to collaborate across the entire shoot, including on-location, post production, and marketing services. Technicolor Supervising Digital Colorist Michael Hatzer worked closely with Director of Photography Caleb Deschanel, ASC, on the color grading for the film, giving it a rich, classic look.

Technicolor’s VFX Producer Alex Knudsen and his team of lead VFX compositors and artists worked with the film’s VFX Supervisor John Scheele on one of their most extensive projects to date. Their work comprised more than 600 VFX shots, with highlights including time period-specific driving comps and TV comps with vintage archival footage seamlessly combined with new footage shot for the film.

Technicolor Marketing Services handled the color grading on all the trailers; watch one of the exciting trailers below!
