Summer in February

Technicolor paints portrait of Alfred Munnings’ early career in Summer in February

Technicolor delivered a range of post-production services for the period drama Summer in February, starring Dominic Cooper (Fleming, Captain America: The First Avenger) and Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens

Based on Jonathon Smith’s bestseller and directed by Christopher Menaul (The Forsyte Saga), Summer in February is based upon a true story of love, liberty and scandal set in a bohemian Edwardian artists' colony in Cornwall. It focuses on the real-life love triangle between British artist Alfred Munnings (Cooper), his friend Gilbert Evans (Stevens) and Florence Carter-Wood, played by Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty, Sucker Punch).

Summer In February was captured on 35mm by acclaimed cinematographer Andrew Dunn BSC (The History Boys, Mrs Henderson Presents).

This is Senior Colourist Paul Ensby’s (Great Expectations, Brighton Rock) third assignment alongside Andrew, previously having worked together on 'Stage Beauty' and 'Miss Potter'.

Paul commented: “The look and feel of this film was dictated by its genre and the subject matter. We were able to make the most of the lavish art direction and the lush Cornish landscape; we wanted to keep the grade as naturalistic as possible but were able to emphasise the colour within the bold costume and set design.

Paul continued: “Andrew is famed for his use of diffusion lenses and filters and he was able to make use of these to provide a sense of period throughout. AJ Munnings’ paintings were reproduced for the film and special attention was paid to replicate all the colour nuances of his artwork. One element of the shoot we had no control over was the weather, and although the production was blessed with a dry chilly January and February shoot, some scenes did have to be enhanced to provide the brightness and warmth required by the script”.

Technicolor was also responsible for the full Digital Intermediate through to Deliverables including 35mm 2K scan, conform, colour correction and creation of the original version digital cinema package.

Summer in February will be released in the UK on 14 June 2013. The trailer is available to watch at www.summerinfebruary.com.
