Technicolor Provides Color Services for In the Heart of the Sea

Jean-Clément Soret provides color finishing for Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea.

The incredible tale that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, In the Heart of the Sea, from Director Ron Howard, follows the crew of the storied whaling ship, the Essex, as they reach the limits of survival. Technicolor Senior Colorist, Jean-Clément Soret, worked with Cinematographer, Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire), to provide color finishing for the project.

The destruction of the Essex leaves crewmembers, played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers), Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Spectre), and Brendan Gleeson (Braveheart) adrift at sea. Facing starvation and despair, the survivors resort to unthinkable actions in order to stay alive.

To achieve the desired look for In the Heart of the Sea, Soret describes the project as, “mixing classical and unconventional photography and looks. It was shot with many different cameras for practical and aesthetic reasons, each giving its own color space and texture.” On working with the cinematographer, Soret commented that, “Anthony Dod Mantle was keen to make a statement and leave a strong print on his images as this is part of his style. His bold and daring aesthetic choices won't go unnoticed by the audience.”

In the Heart of the Sea went into wide release on December 11th, 2015.
