Thor: The Dark World Post-Production

Opening internationally one week in advance of its North American premiere, director Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World is the latest feature from Marvel Studios and the Walt Disney Company. And after its first weekend, the film was already considered one of the largest theatrical openings of the year internationally.

Technicolor provided digital intermediate finishing for the film’s range of release formats, including 2D and 3D, with the color grading supervised by Steve J. Scott, the company’s senior supervising digital colorist based in Hollywood. Other services provided on behalf of the production include feature mastering, and a full array of digital cinema deliverables.

Stated Steve Scott, “Thor: The Dark World had one of the most compressed post-production schedules of any major effects-driven tent-pole project in memory. But working remotely at Lantana/Todd AO, in West Los Angeles, we had three separate theatres dedicated to grading for 2D, stereo, and stereo review.” The film’s sound mixing was being finished on an adjacent stage.

Scott worked with Taylor and the film’s cinematographer, Kramer Morgenthau, ASC, beginning shortly after the completion of principal photography, to set the film’s look.
