The Second Workshop On Storage, co-organized by Technicolor and INRIA, is an open event that brings together experts in the area of distributed and cloud storage, to discuss various aspects of the problem, expose recent progress in the domain and identify research challenges. Held on November 20th in Rennes, France, the topics addressed included Cloud and data center architectures, cloud deployments, codes for distributed storage, data consistency, and storage.

Speakers from various organizations such as Microsoft Research, IBM, Imperial College of London, University of Massachusetts, INRIA, and Technicolor presented to over 70 attendees from organizations such as Orange Labs, Supelec and Telecom Bretagne. From Technicolor, Christophe Diot presented “Challenges in Digital Services Delivery: The Cloud vs. The Crowd” (see extract below) and Alex Van Kempen presented “Efficient Maintenance Framework for Storage Systems.”

Extract: Challenges in Digital Services Delivery: The Cloud vs. The Crowd

The universal answer to home service delivery these days seems to be “The Cloud,” even though nobody really agrees on what “The Cloud” is. In order to bring some transparency to the Cloud, we will identify what the challenges are in digital home services delivery, discuss the strengths and limitations of a pure cloud approach, and finally propose a hybrid solution relying both on data centers and home devices to better serve home users. We will discuss the research and technology challenges that have to be solved to deploy this digital service delivery architecture.
