Thomson, a worldwide leader of services to content creators, has launched its latest third generation high definition set-top box, the 805 HD platform

Third generation STB for high quality broadcast and broadband television matched to excellent life-cycle environmental performance

Paris (France) / CES (Booth #13219, Central Hall) Las Vegas, 7 January 2010 – Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453; NYSE: TMS), a worldwide leader of services to content creators, has launched its latest third generation high definition set-top box, the 805 HD platform. Available with or without a hard disk for PVR functionality, it includes embedded memory to enable over-the-top services and other functionalities including time shifting.

“ Everyone is agreed that hybrid delivery is the way forward, with linear television broadcast as it is today and access to interactive and on-demand content from the same device on the same screen, delivered over broadband ,” said Georges Laplanche, Senior Vice President, Connect Division, Thomson. “ Thomson is a world leader in set-top boxes, and our third generation 805 HD platform not only packs in the most comprehensive functionality, it does so with low power consumption in a small footprint device – a fully featured option for operators who want to marry the best of the broadcast and broadband content worlds .”

The 805 platform can be tailored to the precise needs of each operator. Interfaces are available for DVB-T and the newer and more efficient DVB-T2 for terrestrial television, and for DVB-S and DVB-S2 for satellite broadcasting. The PVR version can be supplied with a scalable 2.5” hard disk in accordance with operators’ requirements.

Ecological design is a core consideration for Thomson, and the new STB is built into a small footprint chassis which uses less material and significantly reduces shipping costs. It incorporates an advanced power management system which switches off those parts of the circuitry not required, resulting in a “deep sleep” mode which consumes less than half a watt.

The 805 HD platform will be available in production quantities to network operators in the first half of 2010.
