Technicolor and Portrait Displays Launch PC Display Color Certification Program

Technicolor today announce that they are providing a Color Certification Program to the makers of PC displays

Paris (France) and San Francisco, CA (US) - September 12, 2012 – Intel Developers Forum 2012 – Technicolor, a worldwide technology leader in the media and entertainment sector, and Portrait Displays, a visual enhancement software provider, today announce that they are providing a Color Certification Program to the makers of PC displays.

By following the program’s specifications and passing a series of product tests, next generation displays will meet the same color criteria used by Technicolor when producing Hollywood movies and other media and entertainment.

“Today’s monitors are largely inconsistent from screen to screen, so we took our film and entertainment experience and combined it with Portrait Displays’ software expertise to allow OEMs to build products that display rich media content the way that the creator intended,” said Manuele Wahl, Senior Vice-President Technology Licensing, Technicolor. She added: “As worldwide color experts for almost 100 years and thanks to our daily work with movie makers across the world, we know exactly how much they take a real artistic care to image and color quality”.

Portrait Displays will provide OEMs with display test and measurement services as well as software for color gamut tuning and display control.

“Technicolor is the greatest name in color for the entertainment industry and is at the forefront of innovation, making their brand a natural fit that allows people to trust that the color on their screen will display accurately,” said Martin Fishman, COO of Portrait Displays. “This certification is important to PC display OEMs who want to differentiate their products in a way that’s easily recognizable and provides value add beyond the usual resolution, screen size and price.”

“Technicolor and Portrait have set out to raise the bar on the visual quality of PC displays and create a color standard that is as widely known as USB and HDMI are today,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, Analyst and President of Jon Peddie & Associates. “It is great to see a group coming together to address color in a way that OEMs will benefit from and consumers will understand.”

The Portrait Displays certified products that meet the program’s requirements all over the globe will be able to license the Technicolor Color Certified logo and display it prominently on their products and collaterals.

Available for all products certified by Portrait Displays, including desktop monitors, laptops, Ultrabooks™, all-in-one PCs and laptop/tablet hybrids, the Technicolor Color Certification defines specifications for a monitor’s color gamut, gammas, color fidelity, white point and backlight brightness that equal the quality of today’s Blu-ray disks (ITU-R Recommendation BT.709).
