Paris (France) & Hollywood (California) – December 13, 2010 – Technicolor (Euronext Paris: TCH; NYSE: TCH) today announced it has worked with MLB Network, Major League Baseball’s 24-hour cable TV network, to provide restoration-remastering of the sound and picture of the historic Game 7 of the 1960 World Series between the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates from the only known source in existence – five 16mm film reels found in late entertainer Bing Crosby’s wine cellar. The original broadcast of the game will be televised December 15 on MLB Network at 8:00 p.m. ET, the first time the game will be seen on television since it was played more than 50 years ago.

The 50-year old source film presented a number of challenges for the re-mastering and restoration process. Technicolor meticulously applied more than 100,000 individual fixes to remove dirt and scratches and address other visual anomalies, while Technicolor’s sound restoration team digitally removed hisses, pops and other audio distortions that would interfere with the enjoyment of MLB Network’s telecast.
Since field and directional microphones were not yet in use at the time, all in-game audio from the original 1960 telecast was captured through the announcers’ microphone in the broadcast booth. This presented a unique challenge, as many effects - even the crack of the bat - were difficult to hear. Technicolor enhanced the audio to capture the full spectrum of frequencies, bringing out as much of the stadium environment as possible and allowing even the softest effects to be heard.
“While the quality of the game’s kinescope was excellent, we knew that working with Technicolor to restore the audio and video was key in order to present the game to viewers in the best way possible,” said Susan Stone, Senior Vice President of Operations for MLB Network. “From hearing the roar of the crowd to an individual fan’s voice, these enhancements help to further inform an audience that has not seen this game in 50 years.”
This is the second collaboration between Technicolor and MLB Network. Technicolor previously restored the 1956 World Series Game 5 between Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers, also known as the Don Larsen Perfect Game. It was the first game ever telecast on MLB Network during the network’s debut on January 1, 2009. MLB Network is currently available in more than 55 million cable, telco TV and satellite homes throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, airing live games, original programming, highlights, classic games and coverage of baseball events. In its inaugural year, MLB Network was honored with four Sports Emmy Awards and 12 nominations by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
