After one year working on semi-automatic 2D to 3D conversion algorithms for catalog titles, 2012 begins with a change of direction: research now focuses on automatic conversion from enriched 2D sources (main 2D view + satellite views + depth information) to stereoscopic or multi-view 3D – internally this is known as 2D-for-3D. I have over 10 years of experience in the Consumer Electronics and Media & Entertainment industry. After one year working for Philips Research France, in 2003 I joined the Thomson Research Center in Princeton, NJ, where I managed the Signal Acquisition & Processing group and worked on 2D and 3D video compression, High Dynamic Range imagery and video analysis algorithms. In 2010, after the company changed its name to Technicolor, I moved to Technicolor’s Research & Innovation Center in Rennes, France, where I am currently working as Principal Scientist and Work Package Leader for 2D to 3D conversion, disparity estimation and view interpolation. I have extensive experience working with content creators and broadcasters and I am actively involved in SMPTE’s Dense Disparity Map standardization effort. I hold MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
My research interests are on almost anything related to image and video processing, including 2D to 3D conversion, disparity estimation, view interpolation, high dynamic range, super-resolution, de-noising, film grain management and compression.
3D content conversion
During 2011, our research was focused on new inpainting, aphamatting & compositing algorithms to improve the user-assisted 2D to 3D conversion workflow of Technicolor’s 3D Conversion BU. Our research work was used in production during the 2D to 3D conversion of Dreamwork’s Kung Fu Panda animation film. Since January 2012, our research has shifted to automatic algorithms to convert enriched 2D sources (with satellite views and depth information) to stereoscopic 3D and multi-view 3D. We also continue our research on disparity estimation and view interpolation for correction & repurposing of stereoscopic 3D video. Cross-site team in R&I Hanover, Germany and R&I Rennes, France.
Tiger 2D & 3D encoder for Blu-ray
Participated in the creation of Technicolor’s AVC & MVC encoder for Blu-ray. Encoded the 3D version of Dreamwork’s Monsters vs. Aliens animation film for the first commercial Blu-ray 3D disk.
Film Grain Technology
Co-invented Film Grain Technology: parametric representation of film grain characteristics for improved coding efficiency of film content. FGT was trademarked by Thomson and components of it are part of the H.264|AVC standard, HD DVD-Video specifications and the current CBHD format. Authored the official FGT specifications, published by SMPTE and created reference software and test streams.
