VR and immersive experiences are creating exciting new opportunities for service providers and their customers. Gaël Seydoux, Research and Innovation Director at Technicolor’s Research and Innovation labs offers 3 ways in which virtual reality and immersive experiences create new opportunities for network service providers (NSP’s) to engage with subscribers.

  • Getting Social: VR may be viewed as a solitary experience, but service providers are exploring ways to deliver entertainment that’s social and lets people interact with a variety of content, devices and people during VR and immersive experiences.
  • Everything is Connected:  Because NSP’s need to open the home to immersive experiences and create opportunities to connect VR headsets with TVs and other devices such as tablets, smartphones, and consoles that are in the home, service providers have an opportunity to look at the connections between the devices to explore how subscribers can share the VR experience through interactions with other devices in the home and beyond the home.
  • Adopt Early (and Often): When you’re inside a 360-degree experience, you’re looking around at 2K or 4K images stitched together, so that’s a lot of definition and a lot of data. To push that to the headset there needs to be tremendous rendering power. This means that NSP’s have a real opportunity to push boundaries and embrace 8K (and the future) in order to sell a seamless interaction in the home for those wanting to enjoy immersive experiences.
