Alfonso Cuarón Discusses His Oscar-winning Film Roma and the Work of Technicolor in an Exclusive Interview

Nominated for 10 Academy Awards – and winning three for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film – Roma is the most personal project to date from director and writer Alfonso Cuarón, chronicling a turbulent year in the lives of a middle-class family in 1970’s Mexico City. Roma is also one of the most beautifully photographed films of the year – shot by Cuarón himself when his longtime DP Chivo was unavailable. Shot in color on the Alexa 65mm camera, the film was finished in black and white to stunning results.

In this exclusive interview, Cuarón discusses how Technicolor was more than a service house but a true artistic collaborator. “They understood immediately the language that we were after – the conceptual challenge that we were setting off to do with this film,” he says. “I wanted this picture to have information in every inch of every frame – and approach every frame as an Ansel Adams photograph.”

Roma is also a visual effects film, and the work of Technicolor’s VFX studios MPC Film and MR. X, often invisible, enabled Cuarón to realize his vision of recreating in fine detail the time and place of his youth.
