CATRENE Winners Named Most Innovative Project

Technicolor and industry partners receive the 2016 CATRENE Innovation Award for their UltraHD-4U project enabling more cinematic and immersive experiences at home.
  • Technicolor contributed new video coding formats for HDR and WCG on the award-winning project.
  • Technicolor integrated the coding technology – Advanced HDR by Technicolor – into a Technicolor HDR STB to deliver premium HDR services.

Technicolor is a key player on the UltraHD-4U team that won the prestigious 2016 CATRENE Innovation Award in Europe. The honor is reserved for projects that are harnessing and advancing technology to deliver the highest market impact and benefits to society. In that regard, the UltraHD-4U project was recognized for its contributions to communication, digital lifestyle, and design technology – three factors being highly affected by the introduction of ultra-high-definition television.

The consortium of innovators that won the award includes Technicolor, CE vendors, and corporate/academic collaborators from Belgium, France, Spain, and Turkey. For its part, Technicolor contributed new video coding formats for High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG), display types that enable more cinematic and immersive experiences on higher resolution TVs. Technicolor integrated the coding technology – Advanced HDR by Technicolor – into a Technicolor HDR set-top box to seamlessly deliver premium HDR services in a single stream to the home.

The team received their CATRENE award for “Most Innovative Project” during a ceremony at the 2016 European Nanoelectronics Forum in Rome.
