The Deep Makes a Splash With Golden Sparrow Award, More Nominations

Goldener Spatz and AWGIE honors come as Technicolor adds to a growing roster of original storytelling and quality animation for kids around the world.

  • A children’s jury chose The Deep for the Golden Sparrow, a highly prestigious media award in Germany.
  • In Australia, The Deep received several coveted AWGIE nominations from the Australian Writers’ Guild.

The Deep has won the Golden Sparrow Award (Goldener Spatz), a prestigious honor at the German Children's Media Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. As one of eight nominees, The Deep – Episode 1: “Here Be Dragons” (known in Germany as “The Seamonster”) was screened in cinemas of the two hosting cities, Gera and Erfurt. A children’s jury representing the show’s young audience awarded the winner in each category, and released the following statement (as translated):

“We chose [The Deep] because the Nektons are exploring the deep sea, even though the rest of the world is more focused on discovering the secrets of the universe. We found the episode very inventive and every second of it was exciting.”

The Deep follows the high-sea adventures of the Nektons as they go where no family has gone before – from dangerous uncharted waters to the mysterious depths of the ocean – in search of answers about “the unexplored and unexplained.” A joint production with Canada’s DHX Media and A Stark Production, Technicolor’s underwater CG-animated adventure series has been a hit – both streaming on Netflix and with multiple broadcasters in overseas markets. Congratulations to the whole team behind the series.

Additionally The Deep has received nominations for the 50th Annual AWGIE Awards in Australia for Children’s Television (5-14 years old). The episodes nominated are: “Beware the Sentinels” and “Finn Comes Aboard.”
