Music to Our Ears - Technicolor Sound shines during awards season with 15 nominations!

Technicolor Sound’s talented mixing, editing, ADR and Foley teams have been honored with a whopping 15 nominations this awards’ season.

Technicolor Sound’s talented mixing, editing, ADR and Foley teams have been honored with a whopping 15 nominations this awards’ season. The nominations span feature and broadcast categories, with Whiplash, The Normal Heart, the Houdini mini-series and more being huge contenders in the awards race.

Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, a film about a young jazz drummer so obsessed with his craft that he willingly subjects himself to the sadistic training methods of his even more obsessive conductor, has been receiving noticeable praise. For their incredible work on Whiplash, supervising sound mixers Ben Wilkins, Craig Mann, and Thomas Curley received an Oscar nomination for ‘Sound Mixing’. The team’s work on Whiplash was also nominated for the Satellite Award for ‘Sound - Editing and Mixing’, an AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in Sound for a Feature Film’, a BAFTA  for ‘Sound’, and two MPSE Golden Reels: ‘Feature English Language – Dialogue/ADR’ and ‘Feature Musical’.

The sound teams who contributed to The Normal Heart were also honored with multiple nominations. Re-recording mixers Joe Earle, CAS and Doug Andham, CAS, and Foley mixer Scott Curtis received a CAS nomination for ‘Television Movie or Mini-Series’. The Normal Heart was also nominated for two MPSE Golden Reel nominations - one for ‘TV Long Form – Dialogue/ADR’ for supervising sound editor Gary Megregian, MPSE, and dialogue/ADR editor Jason Krane, MPSE, and one for ‘TV Long Form – VFX/Foley’ for supervising sound editor Gary Megregian, MPSE; sound designer Timothy A. Cleveland, supervising Foley editor Scott Curtis, MPSE; Foley artists Alicia Stevenson and Dawn Lunsford, and sound effects editor Paul Diller.

The History Channel’s Houdini also received a number of nominations. The CAS nominated Houdini: Night 1 for ‘Television Movie or Mini-Series’ honoring re-recording mixers Onnalee Blank, CAS and Ken Burton, CAS; and ADR mixer Chris Navarro. Houdini: Night 1 (supervising sound editor Michael J. Benavente, MPSE; supervising Foley editor Robert Ulrich, Foley artist Joan Rowe, MPSE; sound effects editors Michael Sana, Paul Diller, Tim Cleveland, and Gary Megregian, MPSE; and Foley editors John Snider, and Rachel Corrales) and Houdini: Night 2 (supervising sound editor/supervising dialogue/ADR editor: Michael Benavente, MPSE, and dialogue/ADR editors David Beadle and Lance Wiseman) were nominated for MPSE Golden Reels.

Re-recording mixers Joe Earle, CAS and Doug Andham, CAS; ADR mixer Evan Daum, and Foley mixer Kyle Billingsley were nominated for the CAS Award for ‘Television Movie or Mini-Series’ for their work on the popular FX series American Horror Story’s season four premiere episode “Monsters Among Us”. Supervising sound editor John Benson, MPSE; and dialogue/ADR editor Jason Krane, MPSE received a MPSE Golden Reel nomination for ‘TV Short Form – Dialogue/ADR’ for the “Jesus Gonna Be Here” episode of True Blood.

Supervising sound editors Ben Wilkins, MPSE, and Craig Mann, and Foley artists Dawn Lunsford and Alicia Stevenson were nominated for the MPSE Golden Reel ‘Feature Documentary’ for their work on Under The Electric Sky, a documentary chronicling the Electric Daisy Carnival, the largest electronic music festival in the United States.
