Technicolor partners with Entropic to deliver a powerful client Set Top Box

By integrating Entropic’s latest silicon with Comcast Reference Design Kit (RDK), Technicolor builds a competitive solution that delivers superior multi-room experience

Las Vegas (Consumer Electronics Show 2013) – January 8, 2013 Technicolor (Euronext Paris: TCH) today announced it is developing a next generation video client based on hardware and software specifications developed by Comcast.  Bundled with a multituner gateway from cable operators, the MediaPlay set top box will deliver IP video to any screen in the home.

The Technicolor MediaPlay client solution has been built upon Entropic’s TSC188 CPU, boasting over 5000 DMIPS with a dual-core ARM® Cortex™ A9 core architecture that provides acceleration for all types of media processing. Further it supports home networking via its bundled MoCA 1.1 silicon and software solution to ensure a powerful, stable connectivity backbone. The Entropic-powered Technicolor MediaPlay client solution supports 3D video and graphics to render the most advanced interfaces based on HTML5 or Adobe Flash.

The Technicolor solution is fully compliant with the Comcast-developed X1 client-server architecture, and supports DTCP-IP technology and multiple Digital Rights Management (DRM) to offer full content security over MoCA home networks.

By leveraging the RDK (Reference Design Kit) software specification developed by Comcast, Technicolor MediaPlay offers an open solution to develop and deploy new services and applications more efficiently across heterogeneous cable platforms.

Comcast is very pleased that Technicolor and Entropic have developed this client solution,” said Steve Reynolds, Senior Vice President of Premises Technology for Comcast. “The collaboration between Entropic, Technicolor and Comcast’s RDK development teams will help enable the development of powerful client devices within highly competitive schedules.”

Our collaboration with Entropic has proven very powerful,” said Barbara Bessolo, Senior Vice President for Technicolor Connected Home Americas. “As new RDK-compliant applications and services become available, cable operators will be able to deploy them on the MediaPlay client set top box and extend the value of their offering over time.”

Thanks to our collaboration with Technicolor, operators will be able to more efficiently deliver quality experiences across their gateway/client architectures,” said Mark Samuel, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Set-top Box Group, Entropic. “Our leadership in building MoCA networked platforms that support highly-efficient, media and graphics-rich content helps bring the power of cloud-based applications to every screen in the home."
