Technicolor partners with GoPro

Technicolor partners with GoPro to incorporate our advanced CineStyle™ color-science into their new ProTune™ Firmware

At the 2012 NAB Show in Las Vegas, Technicolor and GoPro announced that Technicolor’s CineStyle™ color profile will be embedded in the ProTune™ firmware upgrade for the rugged and versatile HD HERO2 camera. Already considered one of the top action sports cameras on the market, this collaboration between Technicolor and GoPro will introduce several key features that will enhance professional production and post- production use of content shot with the HD HERO2.

Some of the key features to look forward to in the GoPro ProTune™ firmware upgrade include:

  • 24fps frame rate -- Making it even easier to intercut GoPro HERO2 content with other sources without a frame rate conversion.
  • 35Mbps data rate -- The industry’s highest quality compressed image with virtually zero artifacts.
  • Neutral color profile -- For greater flexibility in a color correction workflow.
  • Log curve encoding -- More detail in shadows and highlights.
  • Reduced sharpening and noise reduction – Results in improved flexibility in professional post- production and color design workflows.

By integrating these new features into the HD HERO2, Technicolor and GoPro offer professional filmmakers a more flexible and efficient workflow that allows for seamless integration with other source material and post-production platforms.  It brings a new level of post-processing to working with helmet cam, point-of-view (POV) video.

“Technicolor is thrilled to makes its color science available to GoPro throughout its ProTune™ upgraded firmware,” says Al Guerrero, Vice President, Technicolor Digital Productions.  “With more than 130,000 (and counting) cinematographers already using our CineStyle™ color profile, we are committed to expanding the CineStyle toolkit and are thrilled to support GoPro as it expands its market base.”

Technicolor’s work with GoPro will particularly benefit filmmakers, cinematographers, editors, and colorists who rely on the HERO2 for their cinematic productions. “Developing this upgrade with Technicolor has provided us with a level of technological expertise that optimizes ProTune™ for the professional market,” adds David Newman, Senior Director of Software Engineering for GoPro. “Filmmakers are making critical decisions every day on the tools they’ll invest in for their cinematic productions, and we are confident our collaboration with Technicolor makes their decision that much easier.”

The HD HERO2 ProTune Firmware upgrade featuring CineStyle™ color-science will be available this summer.
