CableLabs’ announcement of the first wave of companies that have achieved DOCSIS 3.1 certification will give cable operators around the world the confidence they need to embrace and launch the latest iteration of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, according to Gary Gutknecht, Senior Vice President, Connected Home Division, Technicolor.

“CableLabs is recognized as a barometer for technology readiness in this industry and for laying the foundation for interoperability among devices. For cable operators, their recent announcement of the first wave of compliant cable devices provides confidence to move forward with their plans to migrate towards DOCSIS 3.1,” he says.

The announcement is also good news for consumers who are increasingly interested in a wide range of applications that demand rising levels of throughput, which will require the 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream performance promised by DOCSIS 3.1.

We expect to see the first consumer-facing launches occurring by the second half of this year. By 2017, we should see wider deployment in many markets across several continents,” says Gutknecht.

Being among the first wave of technology providers certified as DOCSIS 3.1 is important because it establishes the first movers in this critical area of technology, for operators all around the world.

“It helps identify who is taking an early and active role in DOCSIS 3.1,” he explains.
