Technicolor India’s participation in the VFX Summit- IndiaJoy 2023 marked an important moment in the world of visual effects, as the company played a pivotal role in fostering innovation and creativity. This annual event, the VFX Summit, brings together a diverse community of professionals, creatives, and experts in the field of visual effects, providing a dynamic platform for discussing cutting-edge trends, exchanging valuable insights, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in filmmaking and digital media.
Biren Ghose, Country Head of Technicolor India, opened the summit with his thought-provoking keynote address, “Unleashing the Future of Creative Technologies.” During his speech, Biren illuminated the dynamic interplay between Creative Technology and the future of VFX Technology, emphasising how technology and creativity are integral to conveying captivating narratives. He stressed the pivotal role creativity plays in shaping the technology landscape.
A captivating panel discussion also featured as part of the summit titled “How Technology is Transforming VFX: From Personal Laptops to Global Data Centres,” where Shajy Thomas, Regional Head of Technology at Technicolor Group, spoke on how technology is transforming VFX. Shajy outlined the impact technology has had on the Visual Effects (VFX) industry as it has evolved from primarily a workstation-based industry to a field that relies on global data centres and cloud computing as a means of rendering and processing. The session presented a variety of perspectives on how this transformation has improved efficiency, flexibility, and collaboration while leveraging GPUs, machine learning, and real-time rendering for creating more immersive and captivating visual effects in films, television, and video games.
Another engaging panel discussion titled “Evolution of VFX in Television series and Feature Films” was moderated by Rajarajan Ramakrishnan, Creative Director of VFX at MPC. The discussion explored the evolution of visual effects, from practical to digital effects, in television series and feature films. The panel also discussed how visual effects have become an integral part of storytelling in the digital age, enabling filmmakers and content creators to make their visions a reality. Furthermore, the panel discussed how technology advancements, creative vision, and the growing demand for high-quality visual effects in storytelling have driven continuous innovation along with providing interesting perspectives regarding the evolution of visual effects in feature films and television series.
RK Chand, Executive Director of The Mill, delivered an insightful presentation on “VFX-driven Storytelling for Screens Beyond Cinema.” His exploration of the future of storytelling through visual effects resonated with his audience, as he explored how narrative possibilities have expanded beyond traditional cinema in recent years. The presentation explored the emerging landscape of storytelling across television, streaming platforms, virtual reality, and augmented reality, highlighting the challenges as well as the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for storytellers, filmmakers, and content producers.
The summit also featured a captivating masterclass led by Bhaskarachari Komaragiri, Principal Trainer at Technicolor Academy. Bhaskar shared the “Fundamentals of Compositing and Node Anatomy,” providing a comprehensive overview of compositing principles. Participants gained a deep understanding of the essential elements of compositing, such as grading, keying, CG skills, and Nuke nodes, during the workshop.
Technicolor India was also a part of an exclusive closed-door discussion, under the chairmanship of Jayesh Ranjan, the Principal Secretary of the IT, Electronics & Communications Industries Department and was moderated by Sameer Jain, Managing Director of Primus Partners India, and Arjun Sarode of Image Centre of Entrepreneurship by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI). During this closed-door session, Biren discussed strategies for bolstering the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector within the state and emphasized the significance of branding as an intangible yet potent force capable of attracting the ideal audience and fostering a cohesive ecosystem. Moreover, he underscored how India has transformed from being a mere support hub to a prominent global player, developing innovations for the benefit of all.
As the summit drew to a close, Biren Ghose returned to the stage for a captivating panel discussion titled “The VFX and Animation Industry in a Globalised World: Trends, Strategies, and Implications.” In collaboration with industry experts including heads of studios and international delegates, Biren explored the rapid transformation of the VFX and animation industry, emphasising the impact of globalisation and technological advancements. The discussion underscored Technicolor India’s pivotal role in shaping VFX storytelling for the foreseeable future.
